Rail faces capacity dilemma

A study carried out by Network Rail late last year into capacity of the East Coast Main Line (ECML), as part of a study into access applications from GNER and Grand Central Ltd for passenger traffic, indicated that there is "no further capacity for freight growth." While it is generally appreciated that the ECML is running at close to capacity, this is believed to be the first time it had been officially acknowledged that there is no room for freight growth.
