New port for Luanda

The Angolan government has unveiled long-awaited plans for its main port in the country's capital, Luanda. Upgrading the country's outdated port facilities has been mooted ever since the Angolan civil war ended in 2002, but it is only now that the programme for upgrading Luanda has been completed. Rather than just rehabilitating and expanding the existing harbour, the Minister of Transport Andre Luis Brandao has revealed that a new harbour will be developed at Dande Bay, just to the north of the existing facilities. Construction of the new harbour will begin before the end of this year and although the government has yet to reveal full details, it is believed that both bulk and container terminals will be constructed. The new harbour will have 32 berths, more than double the 15 provided at Luanda at present.
