Norilsk Nickel, the world's biggest nickel and palladium producer, has started building its own general cargo terminal with its own berth at the Rus-sian Barents Sea Port of Murmansk, which already handles around 0.58 mt of Norilsk's cargoes each year and is the only outlet for its production fa-cilities located on the Kola peninsula. By leasing a berth and carrying out its own operations, the shipper will secure autonomy from the rest of the port's operations. The new facility, with an estimated price tag of US$35M, should come on stream in 2012 and will handle almost 0.8 mtpa, taking into account scrap and third party cargoes.
