Soya on the Uruguay

Following the installation of signalling on the Uruguay River, the Uruguayan port of Salto has begun loading soya on barges bound for the coastal port of Nue-va Palmira. Previously, politicians thought that only containers would make use of inland waterways, but, as has already happened on the Paraguay-Paranagua inland waterway, push-barges are now being deployed to transport dry bulk. An initial consignment of 3,000t of soya beans was loaded on an ocean-going vessel at Nue-va Palmira, bound for China. The push vessel involved was operating under the Uruguayan flag, while the two barges were registered in Paraguay. Signalling on the Uruguay River is now in place between Conception del Uruguay and the coast, although officials want to see the river dredged as far as Ibicuy to allow more commercial traffic to be generated.
