Rail maintenance and renewal work may not be particularly glamorous, but it is big business. With £16bn to spend over the next 10 years on the nation's creaking network, Railtrack - the privatised rail infrastructure provider - is virtually a permanent fixture at the head of the Building/ Glenigan list of construction's top clients. But Railtrack is in a fix. It is harangued from all sides whenever a signal fails, and every penny of its - admittedly handsome - profit is viewed by the public as cream for the firm's fat-cat bosses.
