Heathrow and Gatwick top airports expansion shortlist

The prospect of a third runway at Heathrow came firmly back into the frame this week after two proposals to expand the airport were shortlisted by the independent commission examining the issue of airport capacity. The interim report by Sir Howard Davies, published on Tuesday (17 December), shortlisted three options for airport expansion - two of which involve increasing capacity at Heathrow, either through a new third runway or through expanding the existing northern runway. A third involves a new runway at Gatwick (see box).
