The government's housing and planning bill has come under heavy fire from critics and sparked protests attended by hundreds of people in London, as the controversial legislation awaits scrutiny in the House of Lords. The bill paves the way for the extension of the Right to Buy to housing association properties, paid for by the sale of high value council homes, and the redesignation of affordable housing to include the government's "starter homes", as well as giving planning approval in principle to brownfield sites. Critics - including the Labour and Green parties and the former head of the civil service Bob Kerslake -have argued the bill will make the housing crisis worse by delivering fewer, not more, affordable homes.
