Appropriate use of the ISO 15686-1 factor method for durability and service life prediction

It has been very encouraging to see the amount of interest in service life planning that is typified by Marteinsson's (2003) paper on durability and the factor method. It has been the subject of a number of papers at the Durability of Building Materials and Components conferences, and also at the recent Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) Congress in Toronto, Canada. There is, however, a concern that interest in the standard focuses unduly on International Standards Organisation (ISO) 15686-1 (2000) and in particular on the so-called 'factor method' described in clause 9 of that standard. This focus appears to be at the expense of service life prediction, as described in clause 8 of the same standard, and which is also the subject of the entire ISO 15686-2(2001).
