If the Stirling Prize is meant to honour the building which has made the greatest contribution to British architecture, the Carbuncle Cup is its polar opposite. Like Stirling, the shortlist comprises just seven buildings (see page 8), and while we know there are worse contenders, we have tried to reflect not just the hideously bad but buildings by architects who can and should do better. Who wins the Carbuncle Cup is up to you. But for the Stirling Prize next Saturday night, the smart money is on Westminster Academy or a housing scheme in Cambridge. Either would be a worthy winner, and the fact that there are both a school and housing on the shortlist is progress of a sort.
