Five on shortlist to modernise grade I listed college

Five firms have been shortlisted for a £10 million upgrade of the grade I listed buildings at Oxford University's Oriel College. The competition is being overseen by Malcolm Reading Consultants, with the winning architect being asked to increase accessibility and flexibility in an area of the college that includes the dining hall, bar, kitchen and other facilities. The five firms shortlisted are Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A), Allies & Morrison, Caruso St John, Panter Hudspith and Wright & Wright. An open day for the competitors will be held later this month and second-stage submissions are due in by September 20. The winner will be chosen the following month. More than 60 teams submitted expressions of interest for the scheme, which was launched in June.
