HKS: 'Have a nurse on your side'

Ralph Hawkins, FAIA, FACHA, president and CEO of HKS in Dallas, has been observing the gradual ratchet-ing-up of healthcare spaces over the years. "When I started in 1976, hospital sizes were roughly 850 sf per bed, and now they're approaching 2,300 sf per bed," says Hawkins. Part of that super-sizing is ADA-related, he says, but he attributes a lot of it to architects thinking that "if this size is good, then making it bigger can only make it better." Hawkins says his firm's standard for hospitals is about 1,850 sf per bed, with patient rooms averaging 275 to 300 sf.
