Informal Meeting Held on Human-friendly Broadcasting Research

NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories is researching human-friendly broadcasting in order to deliver accurate information and make programming enjoyable for all residents, including the elderly, children, non-native residents who are not yet fluent in Japanese, and people with vision and hearing impairments. In December 2012, we invited people with hearing difficulties and their family members to an informal meeting where we shared our latest human-friendly broadcasting research results and exchanged opinions. The featured research included a closed-caption generation technology based on speech recognition, a technology to translate Japanese text into computer graphics-based Japanese Sign Language (JST), and a technology to convert news text into simplified Japanese for easier comprehension. A lively discussion ensued.
