For those pursuing, or considering,. Problem based learning or other student centred approaches in undergraduate medical curriculums, tutoring has major strategic implications for staff recruitment and reward, staff development, quality assurance, and educational research. Despite a limited evidence base on the determinants of effective tutoring in problem based learning, staff development should ensure expertise in group process, raise awareness of the effect of subject knowledge and role modelling, and support tutors who are unfamiliar with the content of the problem scenario.
