Barbara Lloyd Remembered

In the contemporary world of art and photography the patron has become a fashionable and integral part of the growth and development of most major art institutions. Today they are the supporters that every arts organisation needs to survive and prosper. Galleries organise courses on how to become a patron. Patrons are interviewed in the weekend press about their taste in art. You can find their names listed in print, on websites and in the entrances to many of our cultural organisations. Yet when you read these names they give little away about the individual behind the good deed. I would like to tell you about one of these individuals, someone I knew and greatly admired for many years.I first met Barbara Lloyd in 1994 when I became the director of The Photographers' Gallery. She was then a trustee and later became the chairman of the board. She had been a supporter of The Photographers' Gallery for many years and had known the two previous directors. We worked together to bring in new trustees such as John Hegarty (Bartle, Bogle, Hegarty), Geoff Mulgan (first head of the think tank Demons before joining the Governments Strategy Unit) Fred Manson (former head of Planning, Southwark Council) and the photographer, Karen Knorr.
