A branch for London photographers

The new branch will mark a first for the National Union of Journalists. However, not all photographers will be able to join. They will have to prove that they do most of their work in London before joining the branch. Michelle Stanistreet, the NUJ's deputy general secretary, explains why: 'Members have always been able to choose to belong to the relevant geographic or industrial branch, which is what often happens with London Freelance Branch, but in reality, the practical benefits of being able to attend a branch closer to home means that many members choose to belong to their nearest geographic branch,' she tells BJP. 'Most NUJ branches are geographic, made up of members from across the union's sectors, rather than industrial.'
