摘要

This is an ambitious book encompassing a wide canvas. Specifically, it is about global capitalism and its effects on workers and trade unions in general, with a special emphasis on India. Unlike the Indian communist parties that see no positive consequences of globalization, Hensman's arguments are considerably more nuanced. The specifics of her arguments are: (1) globalization is an 'emerging phase of capitalism' and is not identical to 'imperialism' or 'neoliberalism', (2) some emerging economies are arising as key players in the world economy, (3) finance capital and institutional investors are now mobile and independent of nation-states, (4) information technologies are crucial factors affecting global economic relations, and (5) new institutions of global governance have arisen in this interdependent world.
