Weather fails to dampen bakers' Christmas spirit

Less than joyous weather over Christmas dampened sales figures as customers shied away from the high street, though takings were still strong for bakers. John Waterfield, managing director of Waterfields of Leigh, said the festive period had been a bit of a mixed bag. "When Christmas came, it came with a flourish, although the terrible weather did take people off the high street a little earlier than we'd have liked." Chris Wainwright, production director at Coopland & Son (Scarborough) said poor weather in the week leading up to the Christmas weekend saw its like-for-like (LFL) sales down a little on last year. "However we had a very good Christmas Eve helped by better weather and had sell-outs at the majority of shops," he added.
