Catch-up maintenance on forgotten Dominican bridge

A landmark crossing carrying 183,000 vehicles per day in the heart of the Dominican Republic's capital has been rehabilitated after not receiving any maintenance since its opening nearly 20 years ago. The cable-stayed Juan Bosch Bridge designed by Carlos Fernandez Casado was closed to traffic in May, after the Ministry of Public Works admitted that the bridge had become a safety risk for users and that damage was being caused to vehicles. The 627m-long, 33.5m-wide bridge crosses the Ozama River in Santo Domingo and has a main span of 180m supported by 63m-high pylons with 48 double cable stays at 10m spacing.
