Past, Present and Future of the Brewing Industry in Mexico

The brewing industry in Mexico began in 1554 when Alfonso Herrera established the first brewery in the country. Later on, due to the poor crop behavior of the barley and wheat, there's no available record of activity until the 19th Century. In 1852 sever- al small breweries were started, but the volume of beer remained small until 1890 when the first successful brewery was built in the city of Monterrey - Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc. In the year 1894 a small brewery named Cerveceria Moctezuma was founded in Orizaba and expanded 10 years later. Today this facility belongs to the FEMSA group joint with the Cuauhtemoc brewery. In 1925 the Mpdelo Brewery started business operations and today owns 55% of the market and exports Corona beer to over 100 countries and is considered as a premi-um brand in several regions of the U.S.
