Ultrafiltration plays a key role in the pretreatment of surface waters. The advantages of the ultrafiltration are complete removal of particles and turbidity as well as bacteria and , viruses. Therefore the ultrafiltration forms an effective germ barrier, which is essential for food industry. Due to intense human usage, water levels in Lake Victoria in Africa dropped in recent years with water quality deteriorating accordingly, especially during rainfall. It was decided to opt for ultrafiltration as the most secure and up-to-date pre-treatment technology. During pilot trials, optimal settings were evaluated, taking into special consideration robustness of the process on the one side and maximum yield on the other side.
