A shadow was cast across the motor-racing world back in April with news of the death of Sir Stirling Moss. He was regarded by many as one of the greatest drivers of all time, despite never having won a world championship - a situation more than made up for by his numerous victories and even more epic drives as a team member for a raft of marques. Among those Moss is best associated with is Aston Martin, not least as a result of his wins at the Nuerburgring 1000km and Tourist Trophy races of 1959, and for setting a lap record at Sicily's Targa Florio the year before - all of which he achieved in the DBR. For those unfamiliar with Aston's most celebrated racing car, just five DBRls were built between 1956 and 1959, yet the model achieved a one-two finish at Le Mans and took checkered flags at many high-profile races around the world, in the hands of Moss and other star drivers such as Roy Salvadori, Les Leston and Jack Brabham. Proof of how significant the cars were to motorsport history came in 2017 when chassis number one realized $22.5 million at auction, a record price for a British car.
