Nicholas Grimshaw: It's interesting to cast one's mind back to the millennium; to the sense of excitement and enthusiasm everyone had about the date. In Great Britain we were probably more excited about it than anyone in Europe. Unusually this stretched to the Government as well. It was showing encouraging signs and wanted new revolutionary architecture that marked the millennium. The Eden Project's founder Tim Smit had a terrific following in Cornwall due to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. He was known in the area and had a lot of support from locals. Everybody could see his idea for Eden was a real draw, providing a boost for local business in the process, extending the tourist season in Cornwall well beyond the summer. Coupled with that was Tim's campaign to demonstrate the importance of plants within the world for our survival. He was extremely strict; the project had to be educational and about plant science.
