When Susan Bank applied for a license to visit Cuba in 1999, the U.S. government didn't allow private citizens to travel to the island unless they met certain criteria— i.e. were scientists, academicians or journalists, for instance. The restriction on travel only made Cuba more intriguing, so this strong-willed Philadelphia photographer signed on to attend the Maine Photographic Workshops' first courses on the island.
