Confronted with the motion studies of Alvis Upitis, one has the sense of looking not at individual photographs but frames from a film—albeit a dark, abstract, experimenta film with no plot and no actors. Intentional or not, the sequential quality of these images doesn't manifest itself as it does in a Chris Marker or Duane Michaels photograph, with recurring figures playing out prescribed, if enigmatic scenarios.
