George Gardner: The Catcher of the Wry

"America is my place, "said George Gardner in a 1982 interview for his book, America Illustrated. "Anyplace else, I'm just a tourist, I don't connect. In America, I feel as if I have some deep notion of what's going on...I can feel this country." Gardner communicates that depth of feeling through photographic documents literally bursting with narrative content, not only about America and Americans, but also about the peculiarities of the human species at large.
