Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but every time I attend a museum or gallery photo exhibit these days, the people around me increasingly seem to be in speed-mode, spending just a few moments in front of each image before rushing on to the next. It's almost as if, having identified the basic figurative aspect of a particular photograph, they don't feel the need to devote extended time in contemplation.
