Hans Peter Kaindl

Austrian-born artist, photographer and therapist Hans Peter Kaindl speaks in broken English about his unusual work with people who have broken voices: schizophrenics. Those voices are reflected in Kaindl's chaotic but somehow gossamer black-and-white photographs that are intended to give viewers an idea of what goes on in the minds of the mentally ill. "What I want with my photos is to translate my emotions and feelings about [my] work with schizophrenics, how they describe their experiences of a brutal world in which they are suffering," says Kaindl. "My paintings did not show this intensity, so I started to experiment with photographs. They better reflect what I feel and see about the twisted reality of schizophrenia and also our own strange 'normal' concept of reality."
