It was the war that affirmed the founding principles of the American experiment and forever altered the destiny of the United States. The Civil War also marked the beginning of the significant role photography would play in shaping and influencing public perception of war. Featuring more than 200 photographs drawn from the Met's holdings, along with images on loan from public and private collections, this landmark exhibition examines the evolving role of the camera during the nation's bloodiest war.
