It has been a tough few months for individuals and businesses here in the UK, where the Biofuels International team is based, and around the world. High streets and shopping centres have resembled ghost towns while company balance sheets have taken a hit. Lockdown measures, while curbing the spread of COVID-19, have put global economies in intensive care. These tough restrictions are slowly being lifted, to everyone's relief, but the road to full recovery will be a slow and challenging one. Companies in the biofuels business are seeking government assistance as demand dwindles and prices fall. The aviation industry, while championing sustainable fuels, has the more pressing matter of making thousands of staff redundant in order to remain viable, as runways resemble huge 'car parks' with aircraft unable to fly. However, the demand for hand sanitisers has been one silver lining for some companies. Essentica, the largest biofuel company in Southeastern Europe, has been busy producing disinfectants and hand sanisiters for hospitals and pharmacies (P.30).
