A novel bacterium, which can be used to convert polysialoganglioside to GM1 efficiently, was isolated from soil with ganglioside as the sole source of carbon. It was identified tentatively as Brevibacterium casei. In a typical experiment, 0.8 g of highly purified GM1 (93%) was obtained from 1.5 g free GM1 crude ganglioside after chromatographic separation. The overall yield of this procedure was estimated to be more than 50% (w/w).
