Old and new CHIMEs in math classes: integration of culture, history, informatics, mathematics and education. A base line study from educational didactics

A CHIME is "a tuned set of bells" or "a series of notes from these". The message which this paper would like to forward is that in every single math class many bells should be ringing, the Culture bell, the History bell, the Informatics bell, the Mathematics bell, the Education bell and many others - in a tune of harmony. In some way, this intention refers to the situation in Greece more than 2500 years ago, when the notion of a science of mathematics came up. At that time "mathematike techne meant the art and technique of learning and applying numbers and (geometrical) figures; areas were Arithmetica (number theory), Geometria (geometry), Harmonia (music theory) and Astrologia (astronomy). They were essentially linked by the notion of number. This meant a new abstract view on mathematics corresponding to how we see it today, different from the kind of mathematics which the Babylonians and Chinese and Egyptians discovered and applied before. But remember that the Chinese word for mathematics, shu xue, also refers to numbers, which explain and govern the whole operation of nature.%Die Arbeit zeigt an einigen Beispielen, wie in einem Mathematikunterricht, der als Unterricht über systematisches Problemlösen begriffen werden soll, häufig sehr unterschiedliche fachliche Argumente zusammenspielen können und müssen, um zu einer Lösung zu kommen und allen Aspekten der Lösung gerecht zu werden. Dies gilt z.B. für die vielseitigen Bedeutungen von pi und phi, an die über das aktuelle Problem einer Währungsumstellung herangeführt werden kann. Das Verständnis der verblüffenden Lösung einer Textaufgabe zur Aufteilung von 17 Kamelen an drei Söhne vermittelt Aufmerksamkeit für die Kontrolle der Korrektheit von Problemstellung und Lösung. Eine Frage nach dem Alter von drei Töchtern unterstreicht die Bedeutung der Kombination von rechnerischen und logischen Schritten beim Problemlösen. Die Welt realer und virtueller Kaleidoskope wird erschlossen durch Anwendung informationstechnischer Medien. Interkulturelles kooperatives Lehren und Lernen von Schülern und Studenten wird mit Hilfe von E-Mail, net meeting oder Video-Konferenzen ermöglicht. Das Verständnis für Binärcodierung wird durch vielfältige Ansätze zu unterschiedlichen Zwecken im Verlaufe von mehr als 3000 Jahren, von Hexagrammen über Geheimschriften und Dualzahlen bis hin zu den binären Zeichenketten der automatisierten Informationsverarbeitung entwickelt.
