Since becoming a government ministerrnten months ago, I have visited 23 countries, met about 6000 businesses and been on regional visits across the UK. I have been impressed by the strength and diversity of the UK economy, in sectors such as life sciences, creative industries, advanced engineering and, yes, financial services.rnIt is true that out of the banking crisis of the past year there are significant lessons to be learned on regulation, remuneration and liquidity. It is, however, also clear that this is a sector which makes a huge contribution to the economy. London is still the world's leading financial centre.
