While cameras had not yet been invented at the turn of the eighteenth century, the skills of draughtsmen, marine painters and ship modellers had, arguably, reached their zenith. Thus we have a wonderful record of the ships, their shapes, structures, armaments and every major detail. Practically and aesthetically, it is a far better record than we have of contemporary warships.
