A few months ago, how pilots and ports could perhaps learn from the airline sector was the focus of this column. The subject of the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) hardly got a mention then. It's time to redress that oversight. There is, perhaps, no area where it is more obvious that ports and shipping can learn from the aviation sector than almost anything related to traffic control. Anywhere in the world from outlying parts of Papua New Guinea to the world's busiest airport hub in Chicago, air traffic control (ATC) is just that, control.
