June 20 this year saw yet another landing barge doing a spectacular capsize on the Papua New Guinea coast, just 80 nautical miles northwest of Port Moresby. Luckily, eleven crewmembers survived and were promptly rescued due to good communication. The cargo, alas, was all gone! While Australian and PNG maritime regulators know full well the history of capsizing landing craft, they are too busy filibustering with environmental rules and detaining vessels for minor infringements of paperwork rather than addressing key issues of safety.
