Remembering Estelle: Her Sisters' Keeper

The recent death of Estelle Ramey has been recorded in the Congressional Record by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Tributes for her contributions to the women's rights movement have been published in newspapers and scientific publications nationwide. Many honors and honorary degrees were conferred on her; she was even "Washingtonian of the Year" some years ago. We laugh through our tears at the repartee that not only made her famous, but also put AWIS on the national scene when she challenged the publishing firm of Williams and Wilkins to withdraw their anatomy text book and threatened a boycott by women of all the textbooks they published. The text book in question illustrated women in their "dishabille" along side properly clothed males. The issue also brought much attention to AWIS as Time and Newsweek articles spoke of Dr. Ramey as President of the one thousand member Association of Women in Science. Subsequently, the offensive text was withdrawn, but the attention she brought to AWIS remains.
