Crammed into a Chicago hotel room 40 years ago, the 27 women who founded the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) were ready for a change. They had been meeting informally at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) mixers for years, discussing the discrimination they experienced in the workplace and the perils of advancing in their careers.
