History of the AWIS Button: The Emblem Seen 'Round the World

An inexpensive lapel button created 15 years ago in an act of desperation has gone on to become the most recognizable symbol of the Association for Women in Science. The AWIS "I Support Women in Science" button debuted during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting in February 1991, in Washington, DC. The AWIS board made the decision to commemorate the AWIS 20th anniversary at this meeting to take advantage of the large and diverse scientific and international media audience it draws.
