The U.S. airline industry, already struggling prior to last week's devastating terrorist bombings in New York and Washington, probably faces even greater financial distress in the calamity's aftermath. Adding to the industry's worsened plight is that no one can predict how long it will have to endure the added strain. Some industry analysts believe it could persist through 2002. UBS Warburg analyst Samuel Buttrick expects industry losses this year to be "unprecedented" as a result of reduced travel, higher jet fuel prices and higher security-related costs.
