New Threats, New Counters

Future combat envisioned by the Pentagon reveals the need for carrier-based aircraft to counter increasingly complex missile attacks. One of these closely held scenarios shows tactical ballistic missiles, fired from mobile land-based launchers, being used to draw attention from low-level penetration by Russian-designed, Su-30 strike aircraft, each carrying two cruise missiles. That is driving the U.S. Navy to field fighter-carried radars that can find fighter-sized targets at 125-150 naut. mi. or more and a new E-2 radar that can push that detection range to around 300 naut. mi.
