Think pre-heating really only affects the engine's long-term durability? Thanks to the NTSB, we know engines can and will fail quickly in cold weather if not preheated. The ambient OAT was 39 deg. F when the Cessna 182 departed late in the morning; four hours earlier it was 28 deg. The pilot did not preheat the engine and had difficulty starting it.
