On August 11,2008, an experimental/amateur-built Lancair IV-P was substantially damaged by an in-flight fire shortly after takeoff from Stafford Regional Airport (RIV1N), Stafford, Va. There were no injuries.After departing RMN, the pilot turned on the "rear battery switch" to charge the battery. Soon, he smetled smoke. The airplane was about 12 nm from the airport. While turning back to RMN, the pilot turned off both battery and both alternator switches.
