INCIDENTS INVOLVE ALL PILOT LEVELS

The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center April report, "Review of Safety Reports Involving Electronic Flight Bags," gleaned 63 incidents from NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System involving EFB from 2000 through 2009; 32 involved charting functions, 27 related to position or data calculations, two involved documents, one charts and documents, and one was unspecified in its origin. Part 91 pilots experienced 24 of the chart-related problems; the balance befell professional pilots—five in Part 135 operations, three operating under Part 121. All of the problems related to EFB calculations originated with 121 pilots.
