According to the NTSB's study of the weather in the vicinity and how it would have been depicted in the cockpit, "[t]he XM Weather radar images from 1220 through 1235 displayed light echoes to the west and north of the accident site with only very light echoes approaching the southwest corner of the accident site region by 1235, with the majority of the moderate to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms north and west of the accident flight track."
