The Corpo Forestale dello Stato's S-64F Aircranes are among the most capable assets in Italy's arsenal for fighting the forest fires that plague it in the summer months. In March 2003, Italy's Corpo Forestale dello Stato (CFS; State Forestry Corps) signed a contract with Erickson Air-Crane to supply four S-64F Aircrane helicopters, the first of which was delivered on October 12, 2004, the last in March 2007. Erickson Air-Crane, a US company, had purchased the rights to produce the S-64 Skycrane from Sikorsky in 1992. Its re-engineered version is known as the S-64F Aircrane.
