Among the most celebrated artefacts of American aviation history, Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress 41-2446, known more recently as 'Swamp Ghost,' arrived at Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor on April 10, having been shipped to the museum in pieces from California. The aircraft should have been one of the B-17Es in a flight that made it to Hickam Army Air Field, Hawaii, during the December 7,1941 Japanese attack. However, it was delayed by engine problems, eventually flying to Hickam on December 17, before island-hopping its way to Townsville, Australia. On the night of February 22, 1942, 41-2446 was among five B-17s that departed Townsville to attack ships at Rabaul, a harbour in Japanese-held New Britain. The mission was the first American heavy bomber raid of World War Two.
