SWEDISH AIR FORCE MUSEUM

The city of Linkoping in the south of Sweden is known as the aviation capital of the country as it has two airfields, the air base of Malmen and an airport, the latter also being home to Saab's aircraft production facility that is currently building Gripen fighter aircraft. Also located at the former is the Flygvapenmuseum (Swedish Air Force Museum). The museum was formally established in 1977 though a collection of aircraft had first been opened to the public in 1967. It had started when squadron leaders at the resident F 3 Wing - Goesta von Porat and Hugo Beckhammar, created the basis of a museum collection intended to illustrate the development of the air force. The local business community, including Saab and CVM (Centrala Verkstaden Malmslaett), also contributed information, material, time and money to build it up. The Municipality of Linkoeping additionally provided its support by constructing a storage facility in the Ryd area of Linkoeping.
