Gordon Thorburn's study of RAF Bomber Command takes a detailed look at the earliest months of World War Two, often called the 'Phoney War', but anything but for Bomber Command. Belief in the invincibility of 'the bombers' was rife in the upper echelons of Britain's military and political leadership, so that Bomber Command's huge losses in the first year of the war came as a terrible shock. The inadequacies of aircraft and associated technologies were also laid bare; in the first four months Bomber Command lost 68 aircraft in combat and 78 to non-combat accidents.
