The credit for the design of the legendary Spitfire is attributed to R J Mitchell. He was brilliant, but did not work alone - in fact, it seems he kept very much in the background of the Supermarine fighter project design team. Recent research by historians and archivists has shown that four other members of the technical department at the Supermarine works at Woolston near Southampton - Beverley Shenstone, Alf Faddy, Alan Clifton and Joe Smith - were at the forefront of the Type 300 development. The project was to become the Spitfire and eventually went into production in factories large and small around the country.
