Halifax Discovered

The sunken wreck of Handley Page Halifax Mk 2 W7656, which was lost during a raid on the German battleship Tirpitz on the night of April 28/29, 1942, has been found in a fjord near Trondheim in Norway. The aircraft was located 600ft (183m) down when engineers were laying a pipeline and stumbled upon a mysterious object. A remote control submersible was sent down to identify what turned out be a substantially complete Halifax. It is likely to contain the bodies of two of the missing crew. Aircraft W7656 is known to have ditched in the area after it was hit by flak. Four of the crew escaped into a dinghy but two went down with the aircraft. It was one of several 35 Sqn aircraft which took off from RAF Kinloss, Moray as part of a small force intent upon sinking the Tirpitz. It has yet to be decided what action, if any, will be taken with regard to the wreck.
